While Rico Roman is a gold medal winner in sledge hockey, prior to that he served in the US Army. In 2000, Roman joined the ARMY and while serving he was hit with an IED. That resulted in Ricos left leg being amputated. For his service Roman was awarded the Purple Heart. Rico got his start in sledge hockey after one of the Operation Comfort personnel suggested to him that he join the San Antonio Rampage hockey club. Rico took the suggestion and played with the team from 2009 to 2011. From 2011 to now he has served as a part of the United States National Sled Hockey Team, and won the gold medal in the 2013 USA Hockey Sled Cup. Ricos other accomplishments include a silver medal in the 2013 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships and a gold medal in the event the year prior. In the 2014 Paralympic Games Rico led his team to the gold medal in Sochi, Russia.
